Abstract

A new European Red List for bryophytes is being published. This is a collaborative project between the European Committee for the Conservation of Bryophytes and the IUCN, with support from the EU LIFE fund. The system used for species assessment is described. x% of the European bryophyte flora is considered to be threatened. Concurrently, a new European bryophyte Checklist is being prepared, with funding from the Irish National Parks and Wildlife Service. This will include a published checklist and also a spreadsheet showing the distribution of species by country throughout Europe. It is intended that both projects will contribute to future research into bryophytes in Europe, and particularly provide a tool for their conservation.
